What Is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy is a gentle, hands-on, non-invasive remedial bodywork technique that uses very precise rolling movements over muscles, tendons, and fascia to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. It’s an alternative form of physical manipulation that aims to reduce pain, improve mobility, and promote overall well-being.
Bowen Therapy can be used as a standalone pain relief technique or as a complementary therapy to other treatments such as physiotherapy, chiropractic care, or massage. Its impact can be felt across multiple systems in the body, and can help shift the body from a stressed state into a more balanced and relaxed state that supports healing.
How Does Bowen Therapy Work?
Based on an in-depth discussion and physical examination, your Bowen therapist will perform a series of very specific, gentle rolling movements over specific muscles, tendons, and fascia on the body.
These movements stimulate sensory receptors in the tissues, sending signals to the brain and central nervous system. The therapist will often pause between sets of movements, giving the nervous system time to process these signals. During this pause, the brain interprets the information and sends instructions back to the body to release tension, creating a self-corrective feedback loop in response that supports the body’s natural healing processes.
Who Can it Help?
Bowen Therapy seeks to rebalance the nervous system and encourage a shift from sympathetic dominance (fight or flight) to parasympathetic (rest, digest & heal). Bowen Therapy can be helpful to individuals living with a range of symptoms and conditions, including:
- Sporting injuries and physical trauma
- Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue
- Migraines and headaches
- Digestive issues
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Sciatica and back pain
- Respiratory and sinus problems, including congestion
- Anxiety, stress & nervous system imbalances
- Jaw pain, earaches & TMJ dysfunction
- Children’s sleeping & behavioural issues
- Pelvic imbalances, groin pain, and uneven leg length
It is important to note that every individual will respond to Bowen Therapy differently, and that treatment plans are tailored to suit each person’s specific needs and health goals. Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bowen Therapy safe?
Due to its gentle movements and non-invasive nature, Bowen therapy is considered safe with minimal side effects and is appropriate for individuals of all ages, including infants and the elderly.
While some may experience side effects such as muscle tightness or flu-like symptoms, these are often mild and will resolve on their own.
Does Bowen Therapy help with sciatica?
Yes, many individuals find Bowen therapy to be an effective treatment for sciatica due to its ability to target the root cause of the pain, rather than solely on the pain’s site. Whether that be releasing muscular or fascia tension, calming the nervous system or addressing spinal misalignment.
How many sessions do I need?
The number of Bowen Therapy sessions will differ from person to person, based on the individual and the condition/symptom being treated. Many individuals will see improvements after 1-3 sessions; however, chronic conditions will require more.
What do I wear?
We recommend wearing light, loose-fitting clothing, because although it can be performed on bare skin, it can also be performed through light clothing. It’s important you don’t wear anything tight, heavy, or restrictive, such as jeans, as it makes it harder for your therapist to work effectively.
As always, towels will be provided for warmth and privacy if you’re comfortable with skin-to-skin contact.
Can I get Bowen Therapy if I am pregnant?
Yes, due to its gentle, non-invasive nature, Bowen Therapy is perfectly appropriate and effective for pregnant women experiencing discomfort such as back pain, pelvic pain, sciatica, or general tension related to pregnancy.
How much time should I allow for a session?
Allow up to an hour and a half for your first session, as it includes an assessment as well as the treatment itself. For follow-up treatments, allow 30 minutes to an hour.
