What are Custom Orthotics?

Also referred to as orthotic insoles or footbeds, custom orthotics are shoe inserts that are specially moulded to your feet to help reduce the symptoms of a range of issues, from common foot problems like plantar fasciitis and flat feet to discomfort in the knees, hips, and legs. Think of their role as being similar to how glasses help your eyes, except orthotics are for your feet which are the foundation of your entire body.

Some individuals use custom orthotics temporarily as a means of managing pain during injury recovery, while others rely on them long-term to support ongoing structural or biomechanical issues. But how do they do this? We’ll get into it below.

How Custom Orthotics Support Your Foot Health

The great thing about custom orthotics is that they are tailored to your foot (shape, size, etc) and to the specific issue or condition you’re experiencing, providing targeted support that addresses the root cause of your discomfort while reducing the symptoms.

Depending on your individual needs and lifestyle, custom orthotics can help to:

  • Alleviate pressure from painful joints
  • Reduce strain on tendons and ligaments
  • Support tired muscles in the foot/leg
  • Correct abnormal foot motion
  • Provide arch support
  • Heal acute or chronic injuries
  • Give your foot better stability and balance
  • Address potential leg length differences
  • Distribute weight more evenly across each foot
  • Provide effective shock absorption and cushioning

What Can Orthotics Help With

Custom orthotics, due to their customisable nature, can help manage a variety of foot, leg, and lower-body conditions and work together with chiropractic care to ensure proper balance and alignment throughout the body.

  • Plantar fasciitis:
  • Flat feet and high arches
  • Bunions and hammertoes
  • Overpronation or Supination
  • Arthritis
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Sports injuries
  • Lower back, hip and knee pain
  • Many more

How Dynamic Chiropractic Can Help

At Dynamic Chiropractic, we utilise the latest technology in orthotics with a digital thermal foot scan to perform a thorough biomechanical foot assessment and show us exactly how your feet are performing. These scans help identify any fallen arches (we have three arches, not just one!), as well as pronation or imbalances in weight distribution that may be contributing to your discomfort or increasing your risk of future injury.

Once the assessment is complete, we provide a detailed report of findings to discuss the results, potential risks, and symptoms associated with them. We can then recommend custom orthotic insoles designed specifically for your lifestyle and personal needs.

At Dynamic Chiropractic, we offer a wide range of orthotic options, including inserts, custom-made thongs, and more. If you have any questions about our process or how we can help, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I know if I need orthotics?

Identifying when orthotics could help isn’t always straightforward, but specific symptoms and patterns can indicate that your feet might benefit from extra support. Common signs and situations that suggest orthotics might be helpful include:

    • Persistent foot pain, such as in the arches, heels, or balls of the feet
    • Discomfort or fatigue in the legs, knees, hips, or lower back
    • Shoes wearing unevenly
    • Changes in posture or the way you walk
    • Problems with balance or falling over
    • You have a lower limb or foot injury
  • How are custom orthotics different from over-the-counter insoles?

Over-the-counter inserts provide general support and additional cushioning for everyday comfort and minor foot fatigue, whereas custom orthotics are specifically designed to provide targeted support to a specific structural or biomechanical issue.

  • How long do custom orthotics last?

The lifespan of a pair of custom orthotics is generally between two and five years. The exact duration, however, will depend on several factors, including the materials, the individual's lifestyle and activity level, and how well the orthotics are cared for.

  • Can custom orthotics be worn in any type of shoe?

Custom orthotics can usually be worn in most everyday shoes, like runners, sneakers and work shoes. However, some styles, such as high heels, very tight-fitting shoes, or specific dress shoes, may not accommodate the full orthotic comfortably. In these cases, we suggest using the 3/4 length custom made orthotics which can be moved from shoe to shoe.  Alternatively, Footlevelers make custom thongs and other footwear that will ensure both comfort and effectiveness without the need for an insert at all.

  • How much do custom orthotics cost?

In Australia, high-quality custom orthotics can cost upwards of $400, depending on the materials used, the complexity of the orthotic, and how many pairs are needed. At Dynamic Chiropractic, we understand that investing in custom orthotics is a huge decision, which is why our number one priority is providing you with value for your money, ensuring your orthotics are tailored precisely to your needs and built to last with high-quality materials.

We also accept Afterpay on the purchase of orthotics to help make the cost more affordable with four easy interest free payments!
